Heads Up Hand of the Week

Posted on Jan 30, 2009 by Gugel in Hand Reading and Tells

Im really excited to start a new feature here on AnskyPoker.com. Every week, Ill post one of the most interesting hands I played and give some analysis. So, lets cut to the chase:

Ive been playing a bit the villain and hes very aggressive. Hes 3betting me 17% but almost always folds to my 3bets. Hes raising the button 70% of the time (which is good) and calling from the big blind 40% of the time (which is a too loose). He almost never folds to my continuation bets.

SB ($271.25)
Gugel (Button) ($206)

Preflop: Gugel is Button with Ks, 8d
Gugel raises to $6, SB calls $4
I always open with K8os. I open with any K for that matter.

Flop: ($12) 7d, 7h, 8c (2 players)
SB checks, Gugel bets $10, SB calls $10
A continuation bet here is standard. From our history, hes almost never folding and I can get a lot of value out of him. He calls and Im pretty happy about it. There are not a lot of 7s in his preflop calling range. To illustrate my point further, there might be like 20 hands with an ace in them in his preflop calling range, but only 5 or so hands with a 7. Hes 4 times as likely to be holding an ace as a 7!

Turn: ($32) 3d (2 players)
SB bets $15, Gugel calls $15
The turn is a complete brick and its very bizarre for him to lead out. Even though its somewhat unlikely, he might have a 7. Raising here accomplishes nothing. All weaker hands will fold and all stronger hands will call or push. Calling is the best play.

River: ($62) 9c (2 players)
SB checks, Gugel bets $30, SB raises to $100, Gugel calls $70
He checks and theres a lot of value in betting. He might have a 3 or an 8 with a weaker kicker that will call my bet. Once he checkraises me here, Im a bit worried. Im really representing a strong 8 or a 7. Is he really trying to get me off an 8? After considering for a moment, I concluded that he really doesnt play a 7 or an 8 this way. I call.

Total pot: $262 | Rake: $0.50

Results:
Gugel had Ks, 8d (two pair, eights and sevens).
SB had 10d, Kh (one pair, sevens).
Outcome: Gugel won $261.50

What do you put the villain on? What do you think the villain puts me on? Do you call the river?

I dont think he would play a 7 or an 8 this way but he might play something like 9T/AdXd like this

your betsizing might have induced something as well

when he doesnt bet the river there is a chance you might check back a weak 8x hand so it doesnt make sense for him to lead out the turn and then not the river if he had a value hand. I think at least some of time you will have a hand like 68s that you would call a bet with but probably not bet yourself

he has to put you on a marginal 1 pair hand to make this play and he has to expect you to be scared of the over/straight possibility

Id expect him to have overs/some Ax hand he decided to turn into a bluff a lot
